Huddersfield Thespians are marking the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death with a truly exciting outdoor show in Greenhead Park this summer. The audience will be guided by a Mistress of Ceremonies on a short tour to watch famous scenes from five of Shakespeare’s most popular plays – Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, Henry V, and Macbeth. Along the way there will be live music and a host of surprises…

SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK is bringing together people from all over Kirklees to stage a    production that everyone can enjoy, whether you are a diehard fan or new to Shakespeare’s work. Over 30 local amateur actors – adults and children – are taking part, with an army of skilled volunteers bringing the show to life – a real celebration of community. Each scene is set in a different time period, casting a fresh light on these favourite moments from Shakespeare. You may recognise some of the lines, but the settings – and the choice of some of the actors – may surprise and even challenge you.

“Shakespeare wrote his plays to be performed in the outdoors – at the Globe Theatre in

London – and in front of anaudience that might have been wandering around, drinking, eating, even calling out suggestions!” comments Lynne Whitaker, co-producer of the project and Secretary of the Huddersfield Thespians.”We are following this spirit of informality and we will be performing whatever the weather. It’s going to be fun!”

Shakespeare in the Park runs from 7-10 July, 6.30pm-9.45pm including a half hour interval. Meet outside the glass cafe at the main entrance.

The shows are free but we ask that you obtain a ticket from the box office at the Lawrence Batley Theatre.
