Ladies Down Under opens Thespians’ new season

The Huddersfield Thespians’ new season kicks off with Ladies Down Under, opening on Tuesday 9 October at the Lawrence Batley Theatre and running until 13 October.

The play follows a group of women from a fish factory in Hull as they embark on an adventure to Australia. We asked Veronica Moran, who is directing the play, to tell us more about it.What is the play about?

Ladies down Under follows on from Ladies Day, which the Thespians performed last year. But it is a stand-alone play, and audiences don’t need to have seen Ladies Day to understand and appreciate it.

Using some of the money that they won at York Races in Ladies Day, the women embark on an adventure Down Under, learning plenty about themselves along the way. The play is both funny and poignant, and the cast do a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life. Most of the cast is the same as for Ladies Day, with the addition of four characters. It is a lot of fun to work on!

Why did you want to direct Ladies Down Under?

I so enjoyed working with the girls the first time round, and since that experience we have all become firm friends. I think the friendship shines through and enhances their performance. There are four new cast members too, which is great.

Forming friendships is one of the many benefits of being a part of the Huddersfield Thespians. I have been a member longer than I care to remember and have worked in most departments, including directing, props managing, and prompting. I have made many long-term friendships and always enjoy being part of the team.We are always looking for new members of all ages and experience. Please do get in touch with us if you are interested – all the details are on the ‘Contact us‘ page of the website.
