The charity night for Happy Families is Kirkwood Hospice: Kirkwood Hospice Kirkwood Hospice, which is based in Huddersfield, opened in March 1987 following many years of fundraising from the public in Kirklees. It cares for local people who face life-threatening illness, for example cancer, late stage heart failure or severe lung disease. Since the Hospice opened, its services have gradually expanded and today it provides 16 in-patient beds, day care services open four days a week in the Kirkwood’s Support & Therapy Centre, including a drop-in service at the Hospice every Friday and bereavement services in the Family Care Centre, including support for bereaved children, together with education and training. As well as providing treatment in the Hospice to relieve patients of the pain and symptoms of their illness, Kirkwood also supports patients who would like to continue living at home. The Hospice Palliative Care Team provides specialist help and advice. By listening to patients and having a flexible approach to caring, Kirkwood aims to meet each patient’s particular needs and wishes, helping them to make the most of the time they have left. At Kirkwood Hospice, care, including a telephone advice line, is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. In 2012 it will cost over £12,000 a day to provide Hospice care. However, thanks to the generosity of its supporters none of these costs are passed on to the patients or their families.
