Huddersfield Thespians are marking the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death with a truly exciting outdoor show in Greenhead Park this summer. The audience will be guided by a Mistress of Ceremonies on a short tour to watch famous scenes from five of Shakespeare’s most popular plays – Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, Henry V, and Macbeth. Along the way there will be live music and a host of surprises…

SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK is bringing together people from all over Kirklees to stage a    production that everyone can enjoy, whether you are a diehard fan or new to Shakespeare’s work. Over 30 local amateur actors – adults and children – are taking part, with an army of skilled volunteers bringing the show to life – a real celebration of community. Each scene is set in a different time period, casting a fresh light on these favourite moments from Shakespeare. You may recognise some of the lines, but the settings – and the choice of some of the actors – may surprise and even challenge you.

London – and in front of anaudience that might have been wandering around, drinking, eating, even calling out suggestions!” comments Lynne Whitaker, co-producer of the project and Secretary of the Huddersfield Thespians.”We are following this spirit of informality and we will be performing whatever the weather. It’s going to be fun!”

Shakespeare in the Park runs from 7-10 July, 6.30pm-9.45pm including a half hour interval. Meet outside the glass cafe at the main entrance.

The shows are free but we ask that you obtain a ticket from the box office at the Lawrence Batley Theatre.

We are delighted to announce that we will be holding three promenade performances of scenes from Shakespeare in Greenhead Park in July 2016. The dates are to be finalised but are provisionally set for 7, 8 and 9 July. Watch this space for updates!
Shakespeare in the Park will comprise a scene or section from five of Shakespeare’s plays – Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, Henry V, and Macbeth. Each will take place at a different location within the park and will last for 20-30 minutes. There will be an interval, and along the way there will bindexe all sorts of other entertainment, including music, singing, and much more!
We are now looking for directors for this exciting new adventure for the Huddersfield Thespians, which will commemorate 400 years since Shakespeare’s death. Directors will be responsible for all aspects of their scenes, working with our wardrobe, casting, staging, lighting and sound teams. Expressions of interest – for one scene or more – should be sent Lynne Whitaker, lynne.whitaker@talktalk.net by 15 January. Please do contact Lynne if you have any questions. We will hold interviews in the week of 18 January.
We are also looking for expressions of interest from actors for the following parts;
Romeo & Juliet: Romeo, Juliet, Tybalt, Capulet, Nurse, Benvolio and Mercutio.
Midsummer Night’s Dream: Quince, Bottom, Snout, Starveling, Flute, Snug, Titania, Oberon, Puck, Peaseblossom, Cobweb, Moth, Mustardseed (these last four parts are likely to be played by children.)
Macbeth: Witch one, witch two, witch three, Hecate, and Macbeth.
Henry V: Henry.
Twelfth Night: Malvolio, Olivia, Toby Belch, Andrew Aguecheek, Maria.

As most parts are relatively short, please feel free to express an interest in different roles. Again, please email Lynne if you are interested – lynne.whitaker@talktalk.net– by 18 January. Auditions will be held once directors have been found, towards the end of January.
Join us to celebrate the life of the world’s greatest playwright and to reprise open air theatre in Huddersfield – our last production in Greenhead Park was in 1922!
